Martial Célestin 1988

Martial Lavaud Célestin (October 4, 1913 – February 4, 2011) was a Haitian lawyer, teacher, and politician who became Haiti's first Prime Minister under the 1987 Constitution. Born in Ganthier, Haiti, Célestin pursued a career in law and education before entering politics. In February 1988, President Leslie Manigat appointed Célestin as Prime Minister. His tenure was short-lived, as he served from February 9 to June 20, 1988. During this time, he also held the position of Minister of Justice. However, his time in office ended abruptly due to a coup d'état that ousted President Manigat and his administration. Célestin lived a long life, passing away at the age of 97 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. His legacy remains as a significant figure in Haiti's political history, particularly as the first to hold the office of Prime Minister under the new constitutional framework.
