Bellerive was born into a prominent family and pursued his education abroad, studying in Switzerland, France, and Belgium. He earned a degree in Political Science and International Relations before returning to Haiti in 1986, shortly before the fall of Jean-Claude Duvalier's regime. His career in public service began with roles in planning and external cooperation, where he focused on development initiatives.
As Prime Minister, Bellerive played a crucial role in coordinating international aid and reconstruction efforts following the earthquake. He worked to address Haiti's immediate needs while laying the groundwork for long-term recovery. His tenure also faced challenges, including political tensions and allegations of corruption related to the Petrocaribe program.
Bellerive resigned on May 14, 2011, to allow newly elected President Michel Martelly to appoint his own Prime Minister. Despite controversies, Bellerive remains a significant figure in Haiti's political history, known for his efforts to navigate the complexities of governance during a time of crisis.
